Mohonk Preserve 2010 Summer/Fall Programs and Events

The following are public programs and events sponsored by the Mohonk Preserve from September through December 2010. Reservations are required for most programs since we have a sign-up limit. For reservations call (845) 255-0919. When someone calls to reserve a space they are given the meeting place for the event. Singles and Sociables outings welcome all adult hikers, single and non-single, aged 18 and above. No reservations are required unless specifically noted. Participants should go to the location listed at the time indicated. Unless otherwise noted, programs are free to Preserve members; non-members pay the $10 day use fee. Children 12 and under are free. This fee allows hiking access to Preserve lands for a full day, sunrise to sunset, and can be credited for up to two weeks towards a membership. Children must always be accompanied by an adult.

*Saturday, July 31st, 11am and 1pm (weather permitting). Mohonk Preserve Interpretive Program “How Did the Rope Get Up There? History and Practice of Gunks Rock Climbing” and “Ecology and People of the Shawangunks, Yesterday and Today.”*

No reservations required. Meet at the Trapps Bridge. These programs will last approximately 20 minutes and involve a gentle stroll. They will be offered by Mohonk Preserve Rangers who are experienced rock climbers. The interpretive programs are free but participants must either be Mohonk Preserve members or purchase a $10 day pass to access the land. The day pass allows hiking access to Preserve lands for a full day, sunrise to sunset, and can be credited for up to two weeks towards a membership. Children 12 and under are free. Children must always be accompanied by an adult.

Singles and Sociables outings welcome all adult hikers, single and non-single, aged 18 and above. No reservations required. Meet at the Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center. This is a strenuous, 8-mile hike, led by John Upton (229-6217). New hikers are strongly encouraged to contact the leader prior to the hike for information on hike levels, what to bring, and other information. Hike leaders determine whether or not to allow pets. This program is free to Mohonk Preserve members and $10 for non-members (includes a day pass which allows hiking access to Preserve lands for a full day, sunrise to sunset, and can be credited for up to two weeks towards a membership).

*Saturday, July 31st & Sunday, August 1st, 9am-5pm both days. Mohonk Preserve – **Skills Workshop: Building Rustic Furniture. *

Join Bill Olendorf, of Twigz Natural Woodwork, and learn the skills to make your own furniture from rustic, local materials. Practice on projects to learn traditional techniques and create unique twig work designs from cedar branches. Work independently on a take-home project, and cooperatively on a bench for the Preserve. Familiarity with basic woodworking hand tools recommended but not required. Participants ages 18 and up are welcome. Reservations are required; sign up begins immediately. Call 845-255-0919 for reservations and meeting location. The program fee per person is $150 for Preserve members and $165 for non-members.

This is a strenuous, 8-mile hike, led by John Connolly (691-6521). New hikers are strongly encouraged to contact the leader prior to the hike for information on hike levels, what to bring, and other information. Hike leaders determine whether or not to allow pets. There is a parking fee per car for this program.

*Wednesday, August 4th, 9:30am-1:30pm. Mohonk Preserve Bob Babb Wednesday Walk – Peters Kill Plus.*

The Bob Babb Wednesday Walks welcome adults of all ages and levels of ability. No reservations are required. Meet at the Minnewaska State Park Preserve Peters Kill Lot or the Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center at 9:10am to carpool. This is a moderate, 5-mile hike. There is a parking fee per car for this program. **

Singles and Sociables outings welcome all adult hikers, single and non-single, aged 18 and above. No reservations required. Meet at the Minnewaska State Park Preserve Upper Lot. This is a strenuous, 9-mile hike, led by John Kenney (436-6046). New hikers are strongly encouraged to contact the leader prior to the hike for information on hike levels, what to bring, and other information. Hike leaders determine whether or not to allow pets. There is a parking fee per car for this program. **

*Sunday, August 8th, 9:30am-12noon. Mohonk Preserve – **Wild Plants of the Mohonk Preserve*.

The green plants of the earth provide food, shelter, and the air we breathe. Join Aleese Cody, Mohonk Preserve Volunteer and Herbalist, and learn about common plants found in the fields and forests of the Preserve and possibly in your own backyard. Learn the do’s and don’ts of plant cultivation, use, and collection. (Please remember that there is no collecting of any kind on Preserve lands.) Bring a notepad, field guide, and camera. Children ages 7 and up are welcome. Children must always be accompanied by an adult. This program includes an easy, 2-mile hike. Reservations are required; sign up begins 7/19. The Bob Babb Wednesday Walks welcome adults of all ages and levels of ability. No reservations are required. Meet at the Minnewaska State Park Preserve Awosting Lot or the Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center at 9:10am to carpool. This is a strenuous, 6-mile hike. There is a parking fee per car for this program. **

*Saturday, August 14th, 9:30-11am. Mohonk Preserve – **Grandkids on the Trail.*

Grandparents, mark your calendars for this exciting forest exploration with a Mohonk Preserve Volunteer. In our modern society, children spend less and less time in the outdoors. Help reverse this trend in your own family by spending time with your grandchildren in nature. Bring plenty of water and a snack. Children ages 6 and up are welcome. The Bob Babb Wednesday Walks welcome adults of all ages and levels of ability. No reservations are required. Meet at the Route 299/9W Park and Ride. This is a moderate, 5-mile hike with a long uphill start. There is no fee for this program.

Saturday, September 11th, 11am-1:30pm. Mohonk Preserve – Monarchs, Magic, and More!

Enjoy a stroll through our historic fields as you search for butterflies with Maraleen Manos-Jones, butterfly expert and author. Discover monarchs, caterpillars, and perhaps even a chrysalis! Hear stories and myths about butterflies and have your questions answered. Children ages 7 and up are welcome. Children must always be accompanied by an adult. This program includes an easy, 2-mile hike. There will be an engaging indoor option in case of rain. Reservations are required; sign up begins 8/1. Sunday, September 12th, 9:30am-1pm. Mohonk Preserve – Stories of Spring Farm: A Historic Walking Tour.

Did you ever wonder about the origin of the buildings and fields of Spring Farm? Join Bob Larsen, Mohonk Preserve Cultural Historian, and Preserve Volunteer Gardeners and learn about the time when this farm provided milk, maple sugar, vegetables, and beef for the Mohonk Mountain House. The walk will end at the Slingerland Pavilion where homemade refreshments await. All food will be prepared with “old-time” ingredients representing the crops grown by early inhabitants of the area. Children ages 15 and up are welcome. Children must always be accompanied by an adult. This program includes an easy, 2-mile hike. Reservations are required; sign up begins 8/30. Join John Upton, Mohonk Preserve Volunteer and avid hiker, and enjoy breathtaking views of the Wallkill Valley as you hike along the top of the Ridge. Children ages 15 and up are welcome. Children must always be accompanied by an adult. This program includes a strenuous, 9-mile hike. Reservations are required; sign up begins 8/30. The Bob Babb Wednesday Walks welcome adults of all ages and levels of ability. No reservations are required. Meet at the Minnewaska State Park Preserve Upper Lot. This is a moderate, 3-mile hike. There is a parking fee per car for this program.

Friday, September 17th, 10am-12noon. Mohonk Preserve Toddlers on the Trail – Trees of the Shawangunks.

Join Dana Rudikoff, Volunteer Hike Leader, and explore different forest habitats. The group may look for Monarch Butterflies flying south in the field along the way. Bring water and snacks. Please leave your pets at home. Jogging strollers are not appropriate; little ones in carriers are always welcomed. Children ages 2 to 6 are welcome. Children must always be accompanied by an adult. This program includes a 1.5-mile hike, and moves at a toddler’s pace. Reservations are required. Call Dana at 845-626-4253 or email her at dana_rudikoff@yahoo.com to reserve a spot. Saturday, September 18th, 1:30-3pm. Mohonk Preserve – Land Art for Families.

Join Mary Leary, artist and Mohonk Preserve Camp Educator for this unique hands-on program. Inspired by the work of Andy Goldsworthy, “Land Art” has quickly become a favorite component of our popular summer camp programs. Using only natural materials gathered outdoors, create your own inspiring art. Bring a camera to capture your work. Children ages 5 and up are welcome. The Bob Babb Wednesday Walks welcome adults of all ages and levels of ability. No reservations are required. Meet at the Mohonk Preserve Spring Farm Trailhead. This is a moderate, 6-mile hike. This program is free to Mohonk Preserve members and $10 for non-members (includes a day pass which allows hiking access to Preserve lands for a full day, sunrise to sunset, and can be credited for up to two weeks towards a membership).

Saturday, September 25th (Raindate: Sunday September, 26th), 9am-12noon. Mohonk Preserve – Hawk Migration Workshop.

Join Tom Sarro, Mohonk Preserve Research Associate, for an indoor presentation introducing distinguishing characteristics of migrating species in flight. Then, enjoy a short hike to the “Hawk Watch” where experts will help you identify the hawks, ospreys, and other birds that ride the thermal air currents above the Shawangunk Ridge. Children ages 12 and up are welcome. Children must always be accompanied by an adult. This program includes a moderate, 2-mile hike, with a short, steep, uphill scramble. Reservations are required; sign up begins 8/30. Call 845-255-0919 for reservations and meeting location. The program fee per person is $18 for Preserve members and $28 for non-members. (There will be no refunds after September 17th).

This is a once-a-year chance to participate in an organized running event on the Preserve’s scenic footpaths and historic carriage roads. Join Dana Rudikoff, Volunteer Hike Leader, and look for evidence of the huge glaciers that passed over our land. You may also see hawks up close and personal as they migrate south for the winter. Bring water and snacks. Please leave your pets at home. Jogging strollers are not appropriate; little ones in carriers are always welcomed. Children ages 2 to 6 are welcome. This program will be led by Dr. Glenn A. Proudfoot, Visiting Scholar at Vassar College and Mohonk Preserve Research Associate. For nearly 40 years Glenn has been studying birds of prey. His current research explores migratory pathways of the Northern Saw-whet Owl. With luck, participants will experience being up close and personal with these silent visitors. The program will include a presentation of research objectives, introduction to mist netting, and, hopefully, observation of a bird banding station in action. Dress for the weather. The Bob Babb Wednesday Walks welcome adults of all ages and levels of ability. No reservations are required. Meet at the Black Creek Parking Lot. (From the Route 299/9W intersection, travel north on 9W 5.5 miles.) This is an easy, 3-mile hike. There is no fee for this program.

How has the Hudson River transformed American history, politics, and culture? Why has its unique geography, scenic beauty, and a culture of entrepreneurship inspired people to innovate in the fields of engineering, conservation, art, and architecture? Join Fran Dunwell, conservationist and author, for an engaging lecture to find out. Children ages 12 and up are welcome. Children must always be accompanied by an adult. This is an indoor program. Join Gail Moran and Steve Schwartz, Mohonk Preserve Volunteers, and experience the spectacular Ridge in winter! Hike through forested woodland, past stunning views of the Catskills, and challenge yourself with a rock scramble. Children ages 12 and up are welcome. Children must always be accompanied by an adult. This program includes a moderate, 6-mile hike, with scrambling. Bring lunch and water and dress for the weather. Grandparents, here’s a great opportunity to spend some quality time with the grandkids. Join Gayle Turowski, Mohonk Preserve Volunteer, and bring the whole gang for an exciting hands-on experience! Learn all about owls and then unravel the mystery of what they eat by examining bones and other prey remains. Children ages 7 and up are welcome. Children must always be accompanied by an adult.
