JOB: Part-time Marine Educator (5-month position)
DATES: April-August 2012
DAYS/HOURS: 24 hours per week, 3-4 days per week (including some weekend days during the spring and summer.)
SALARY: $22/hour (without benefits)
City Parks Foundation (CPF) is the only independent, non-profit organization to offer park programs throughout the five boroughs of New York City. CPF works in over 700 parks citywide, presenting a broad range of free arts, sports and education programs and helping citizens to support their parks on a local level. CityParks Education, founded in 1993, presents a wide range of programs targeted to children, youth, and educators in public schools, parks, recreation centers and other community sites.
COASTAL CLASSROOM PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Coastal Classroom is a joint project of CityParks Education and the Partnerships for Parks Catalyst Project. CityParks Education has operated interdisciplinary environmental education programs in schools and parks since 1992. Coastal Classroom focuses on coastal ecology, water quality, urban waterfront restoration and preservation on the Queens Waterfront and in Coney Island. Coastal Classroom offers one-time and multi-session programs for schools (4th grade and up), non-profit groups, civic organizations and the general community. Through site specific inquiry-based lessons, we provide stimulating and meaningful learning experiences for a range of community members in their own community.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design, adapt, and deliver one-time and/or sequential developmentally appropriate lessons and workshops for diverse participants, including, children, youth, family members and senior citizens.
- Help develop curricula that include a progressive series of hands-on, interdisciplinary lessons that hone academic skills, encourage curiosity, and support mandated academic standards.
- Help conduct outreach and recruitment to schools, organizations, and community groups. Coordinate sites, schedules, and garden visits.
- Supervise and help train high school and college interns.
- Provide logistical support and complete general administrative duties as needed.
- Assist with data collection and recordkeeping.
- Help facilitate the seamless integration of activities, and develop linkages with key park personnel and community members.
- Help maintain, repair and protect tools and equipment, including waders, nets, buckets, water quality kits and other gear.
- Requires ample set-up and break-down time. This includes moving of heavy equipment (waders, nets, moving cart) and other physically arduous tasks.
QUALIFICATIONS
- ? Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Marine Ecology, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, or related field.
? Knowledge of marine ecosystems, marine life, data collection, and data analysis.
? Experience teaching outdoors and in non-traditional settings using interactive methods desirable. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in inquiry-based methods and in developing interdisciplinary academic curricular materials.
? Strong/solid classroom management skills and ability to handle different types of learners.
? Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
? Valid driver’s license.
? Willingness to travel alone on public transportation to schools throughout New York City.
? Ability to work with diverse students, all age groups, and low-income communities.
? Ability to work independently and as part of a team essential.
? Versatility, resourcefulness and creativity required (contagious enthusiasm would be great).
? Willingness to work outdoors from April-August in hot/cold/sometimes uncomfortable weather conditions (manual labor necessary).
? Willingness to work some weekends on a regular basis.
