Westmoreland Sanctuary requests undergraduate college student interns for the 2016/2017 school year to expand its Earth Science Environmental programming and Civic Conservation initiatives. The internship is designed to improve the quality and scope of education Westmoreland provides through after-school programs, school field trips, in classroom instruction and scout groups. In addition, the internship program will give experience to college students in conservation field research techniques and civic conservation projects such as trail maintenance. This is a multi-faceted program.
Outdoor conservation and study will act as the academic and experiential learning basis for interns and students. Conservation, fieldwork and civic training will consist of aquatic and non-aquatic habitat projects. Interns will participate in ongoing assignments and analysis and will eventually be given these tasks to perform independently.
Collegiate interns will become an integral part of our staff, teaching public education outreach programs using their acquired experiential learning techniques. They will also lead and perform civic activities such as remarking & replacing trail signage. As a result, Westmoreland will be able to reach far more young people within its educational series in addition to raising the student-to-teacher ratio and thus improving the quality of the learning experience. The traditional docent role is expanded and enriched, as collegiate interns will actively be engaged in fieldwork, study and civic training.
Three Core Programs supported by the New York State public school curriculum will be presented to the community. Interns will be taught how to analyze and quantify program impact through pre and post surveys. In addition to Westmoreland bringing these programs to a much broader audience, the Interns will command advanced knowledge and practicum within their chosen field of study, not otherwise acquired in a normal classroom environment.
