The Audubon Community Nature Center President



The Audubon Community Nature Center (ACNC) in Jamestown, New York is seeking an experienced, progressive individual to assume leadership of the organization as President. ACNC has been a dynamic community institution for over 60 years.  We own and manage 600 acres with 5 miles of trails and a nature center. ACNC has a robust education program for schools, youth, adults and families. We host school field trips, outreach programs, day camp, public programs and large events. These programs and events bring our brand to life by generating wonder and excitement for the natural world.


Our Nature Center is located in scenic western New York with a diversity of nature from numerous lakes and streams to forest-covered hills. It is an outdoor lover’s paradise. The rural community boasts warm and friendly people and an affordable place to live. Come follow your passion and join us!

The President is the chief executive officer responsible for the overall leadership, management and administration of ACNC. You will be supported by a seasoned, dedicated staff and a large corps of enthusiastic volunteers. Working collaboratively with Board, staff and volunteers, you will lead an excellent program to new heights and provide leadership and inspiration for the next era of growth.



Scope and Responsibilities


Strategic Planning and Leadership

The President leads the organization through a strategic planning process that sets goals with measurable outcome-based objectives for the future growth of the organization. You will oversee the implementation of the plan to ensure ACNC is best serving the community.


Fiscal Management and Development

The President ensures sound financial management through developing and executing an effective budget and overseeing all philanthropic development including grants, membership and giving by individuals and businesses.  



Community and Board Relations

The President is responsible for nurturing and developing relationships within the wider community. As the spokesperson of the organization, you will represent ACNC at community organizations and public functions. The President speaks knowledgeably on ACNC’s mission, programs and future to the wider community.


The President reports directly to the board of directors. You will communicate effectively with the board, utilize their time and talents to advance the mission of ACNC and assist in the recruitment and development of board members.


Buildings and Grounds Management

The President has overall responsibility for the buildings, grounds and the physical plant. Working with the building and grounds manager, staff, and the Land Use Management Committee, you will provide oversight for 600 acres, a three-story nature center and outbuildings.


Personnel Management

The President oversees the hiring, supervision and evaluation of a small, passionate staff.  You will also cultivate and maintain volunteer relationships. An ideal candidate can inspire a diverse group of staff and dedicated volunteers to be creative, to problem solve and to complete diverse tasks.




  • Bachelors degree in a relevant field.
  • Five years of management experience, preferably in a nature center setting.
  • Broad management skills and evidence of strong, inspirational leadership ability.
  • Fundraising experience, including grant writing and donor cultivation from individuals and businesses.
  • Experience in facility management.
  • Passion for and understanding of the natural world and environmental issues.




  • Masters degree in a relevant field.
  • Natural history and/or education background.
  • Community oriented.
  • Experience in creative problem solving.
  • Experience in working with Doubleknot or a similar customer relationship management system.
  • Strategic planning experience with a focus on outcome based objectives.
  • Land management experience, including invasive species planning.
  • Experience with a capital campaign.
  • Familiarity with Quickbooks or a similar financial software.
