Staff Naturalist Educator/Education Coordinator

Position:  Staff Naturalist Educator/Education Coordinator. Position Summary:  Full-time with benefits, 10 month. Helmer Nature Center in Rochester, New York is seeking an experienced and highly organized professional with both outdoor and classroom teaching experience to create, implement and coordinate standards-based nature and environmental education programs to groups visiting the nature center.   Helmer Nature Center is owned and operated by the West Irondequoit Central School District as both an outdoor classroom and an environmental resource for the community since 1973.

Reports to:                   Nature Center Director

Salary:                 $14.50/hour, NYS Teachers Retirement System, Benefits


3-5 years prior experience teaching, planning & facilitating children’s nature based programs in an educational setting.   

Knowledgeable about environmental topics, local flora/fauna, a strong environmental ethic, and a passion for education.

Degree or coursework/knowledge base in Science, Education or related field.

Ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions, temperatures, and lead groups over uneven terrain.

Ability to interact successfully with co-workers, teachers, parents and students.

Ability to work both as a team member and independently

Excellent oral, written, communication and organizational skills

Excellent interpersonal skills

Ability to work with and care for live animals. 

Knowledge of Windows operating system and Microsoft Office

Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation



Job Responsibilities Include:

The Education Coordinator oversees all aspects of the nature center’s education programs to include the scheduling of visiting groups (in and out-of-district schools, homeschool groups, scout programs, etc.), teacher correspondence (program schedules/descriptions, reservation forms, answer questions, etc.), maintenance of class visit records, overall management of program materials, staff training (when necessary), and the overseeing of daily/weekly planning meetings with teaching team to address specific program activities, staffing assignments, timing of segments, etc.     

Along with part-time Staff Naturalist Educators, create and implement on-site, standards-based nature and environmental education programs (outdoor and indoor)

Periodic travel to West Irondequoit classrooms and outside school districts to provide outreach educational programs

Gather and implement feedback from teachers to improve lessons and programs

Daily care of live animal collection, including feeding, cleaning and enrichment activities

Periodic facilitation of on-site and outreach programs for scout groups, clubs, etc.

Periodic presenting at local science education fairs and expos

Assist with the nature center’s public events throughout the year when education staff is needed

Write professional articles for seasonal newsletter “Ecolog”

Create interactive displays in classroom areas and along nature trails to allow for self-guided learning for both school and public groups

Set up and clean up for programs
