3-4:30pm. Mohonk Preserve – The Nasca Lines: Theory and Discovery.</p>
<p>For decades scholars have studied the Nasca Lines in southern Peru. These drawings consist of geometric shapes and animal figures formed by ancient people who etched these designs into the desert floor more than 1,500 years ago. Although several theories have been proposed regarding the function of the Nasca Lines, until now no one has been able to support their hypothesis scientifically. While searching for additional water sources for the city of Nasca, Dave Johnson discovered a correlation between geology, hydrology, archaeology, and the Nasca Lines. As he studied geological faults and aquifers in the region he realized the Nasca Lines also mapped their course. Recognizing that these shapes functioned as hieroglyphs he eventually deciphered some of their indications enabling him to read this ancient script. Today he is applying this knowledge to other regions of the world. Johnson is a National Geographic Research and Exploration recipient and has collaborated with the University of Massachusetts.</p>
<p>This program takes the audience on an intriguing journey which examines the ancient Nascan culture and the clues which enabled Johnson to solve one of the most elusive ancient mysteries. The program concludes with a display of 1,500 to 2,000 year old textiles, tools, and pottery from southern Peru. Ages 16 and up are welcome. Children must always be accompanied by an adult. This is an indoor program. Reservations are required. Call 845-255-0919 for reservations and meeting location. The fee per person: $5 for Mohonk Preserve members, $10 for non-members.
